Children in Guadalupe

We deliver food for 300 children in the hills of Guadalupe whenever we get sponsoring for this. This feeding costs 3.500 pesos (about 85US$). These children live far up in the hills with their families, and most don’t have electricity or running water. Some of the children walk for 1 hour to school every day, as they are too poor to take the bus.

Elementary School

Since 2004 we have been delivering food for the 800 pupils at Maghaway Elementary School. We were first introduced to this school through a friend who told us that the school had about 40% malnourished children, and she would donate one sack of rice a month to feed the malnourished children at school. We got sponsoring locally from friends and interested individuals who wanted to help these children, so we invested in the very large pots so we could cook lugaw for them. Lugaw is a rice porridge with plenty of vegetables and chicken. From then on this feeding has expanded and through the school year 2007-2008 we cooked every Wednesday for 1500 elementary school children at the school and shared the food with Tapul Elementary School, which is in the furthest barangay in the mountains, and Jaclupan Elementary School. This was made possible through sponsoring from a Søernes Rotary Club in Copenhagen, Denmark, and they sponsored again the weekly feeding of 1500 pupils for the rest of the year 2008. We are now looking for sponsors who will make it possible for us to continue to help these children.

The children’s health in Maghaway Elementary School has improved tremendously. Apart from the feeding, we have also given free dental treatment to all the children 3 years in a row, so coupled with better nutrition, these children have now brought their school to the top in achievement in the city of Talisay, compared to previously ranging close to the bottom of the some 20 schools in the city. This shows that health and nutrition goes hand in hand with better educational achievement, and thus a brighter future.

Feeding program every Sunday at hospitals and institutions

We distribute food regularly to children in different hospitals and institutions. Restaurants in Cebu City and Mandaue City take part in this event, giving the children nutritious and wholesome food and snacks. The pediatrics ward and the ward for communicable deceases of The Vicente Sotto Medical Memorial Center Hospital as well as Cebu Hope Center in Talamban for sexually abused children and The Missionaries of Charity in Suba Pasil, Cebu City are the beneficiaries of this feeding. A patient admitted to a public hospital here has to buy his own medicines and materials needed for the treatment and being from underprivileged families they often use all their savings and the family often starve as they care for the patient.
