Volunteers through Channel of Hope!
Dan and Natalia from Denmark lived in the Philippines from February – July 2004, doing voluntary work.
Doing voluntary work had been our wish for a while, but finding the right project proved difficult. We didn’t have any immediate skills that could be put into use within the different organizations we had been in contact with. In Denmark Dan worked in an advertising agency, and Natalia worked with Internet marketing. One of our friends knew Channel of Hope from when she did her practicum as a student teacher in Cebu. She was convinced that they could find some use for us in one of their many projects.
She was right! Flemming and Elisabet were more than happy to help us. They believed that every person had something to offer, regardless of skills. Elisabet took the time to come and see us while she was in Denmark in October 2003. We had a talk about voluntary work, and were shown pictures of different projects. Not only the ones Channel of Hope was directly involved with, but also projects run by fellow organizations.
We decided to spend six months in the Philippines, working with children in some of the poorest areas in cooperation with Cebu Missionary Foundation. When our plane landed in Cebu on February 9th, Flemming and Elisabet were there to pick us up and drive us to our new home. Channel of Hope had been working hard to find a house for us to stay in. It had not been in use for a while, but they had cleaned years of dust from it. It looked perfect!
During our first few weeks in Cebu, Flemming and Elisabet dedicated all their time to make sure that we felt at home, and that all the new impressions did not overwhelm us. Every little problem we had was taken care of, and we never felt lost or unsure of what to do. Throughout our time here, Flemming and Elisabet have been a great support and a source of knowledge. Every day has been a great experience, and we will always be grateful for their help and friendship.
